PADI Basic Freediver Course

The PADI Basic Freediver is your first step into the world of breath-hold diving. In this course, we focus on the foundations—relaxation, breath awareness, and smooth, efficient movement in water. Training takes place in the Blueback studio as well as a calm, confined-water setting, so you can develop safe, confident technique without the pressure of open-water depth.

 

You’ll learn how to breathe, hold, and move like a freediver through guided practice in static and dynamic apnea in the pool. Open to anyone 12 years and older with confident swimming ability and good health, no previous snorkeling or diving experience is required—just curiosity and a willingness to discover what’s possible beneath the surface.

  • Fundamental freediving principles: breathing cycle, relaxation, effects of pressure, and safe buddy practices.

  • Confined‑water skills: breath‑hold techniques, static apnea, and dynamic apnea with streamlined body position and efficient finning.

  • Techniques to improve mindfulness; how to reduce tension, quieten the mind and listen to the body.

  • Performance goals typically targeted at this level: 90‑second static apnea and 25‑metre dynamic apnea (performance‑based, progress at your pace).

  • Intro to equipment selection and weight system; how to prepare and care for gear.
